Summer Symphony

A summer's day in four parts

© 2015 Joseph C. Nemeth

This work came fairly easily, toward the end of my time in Fort Collins.

The first movement is subtitled “A Summer’s Day.” It’s in an odd Greek mode, called the Myxolydian mode, has a sweet nap in the middle, and ends with a bang.

The second is called “Child’s Play,” and is a summer day as seen by a child. The main theme running through it is a variations of the old “Nyah Nyah Na Nyah-Nyah,” thing young children tease each other with, complete with tearful fights, making up, a circus, pirates, a long, lazy sunset, and at last, sleep.

The third is in 5/4 time, and strikes me as an evening cocktail party in a well-lit garden.

The fourth and final movement is a night-time Bacchanal with wild dancing through the night, concluding in birdsong and a glorious sunrise.
